Job Description:

The Physics Department and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory at New Mexico Tech (NMT) are building a unique NIR purpose-built multi-object spectrometer to be used in the study of exoplanet atmospheres - NESSI. The instrument and its development are funded via NASA EPSCoR and direct observatory funding. Our NASA collaborators on the NESSI project are the Exospec Team at JPL, led by Dr. Mark Swain. We are presently on an aggressive schedule to first light of NESSI at MRO in mid-2011.

We are looking for a highly-motivated instrumentation postdoctoral researcher to join our distributed team of engineers, students and the instrument PI, Prof. Michelle Creech-Eakman. This individual should ideally have hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas: near-infrared cryogenic instruments (including optics, FPAs, electronics, vacuum/LN2 systems, and software interfacing), characterization of instruments in the lab/at the telescope, thorough data analysis and reduction with experience in debugging and optimizing instrumental operations, and routine operations of spectrometers at a high-altitude observatory. We are a small team and encourage our team members to participate in all elements of the project including observing, data analysis and reduction, proposal writing, giving presentations and publishing the results.

The postdoctoral position, available immediately, is nominally for two years, with the possibility of continued funding via submitted proposals. Along with the MRO staff, we are co-located with the NRAO-AOC for the EVLA, so there is frequent opportunity to interact with local instrumentation developers and astrophysicists. NMT is located in the town of Socorro, approximately one hour south of Albuquerque. Ample recreation in the immediate area includes off-road biking, hiking, camping and rock-climbing.

Candidates should send a letter of interest, CV and list of relevant publications to the HR department above, and arrange for three recommendation letters to be sent directly to Prof. Creech-Eakman. Evaluation of applications will begin Aug. 1 and continue until filled. Additionally, we will be at the SPIE San Diego meeting in late June if you care to visit with us in person. NMT is an AA/EO employer and applications from underrepresented minorities, women and veterans are strongly encouraged.

Included Benefits:

Benefits include health, dental, vision, life and retirement and also flexible spending accounts are available. To see details of employer/employee contributions see: http://www.nmt.edu/employee-benefits
