Job Description:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position based in the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Martin C. Smith on topics related to Galactic Archaeology and the formation of the Milky Way. Any field of expertise is welcomed, either in data analysis/mining/modelling from large surveys or in numerical simulations.Galactic Archaeology is a major growth area in China and one in which a significant amount of resources are being placed. Most notably the new 4m wide-field spectroscopic telescope LAMOST will have a huge impact on the field and applicants whose work is related to this instrument will be particularly welcomed. However, many other projects are being carried out, both photometric and spectroscopic, which the successful applicant will be encouraged to exploit.
The Institute is designed to be a forum for global scientific exchange and a training centre for international postdocs and students. KIAA organises a variety of academic activities and programs to stimulate research and promote interdisciplinary interactions. The working language of KIAA is English and there is a broad mix of international faculty and postdocs. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity of supervising some of the highly talented Peking University graduate students.
The appointment will be for two years with a possibility for a third, with a salary which will depend on qualifications and experience. The applicant will receive a generous research budget and will be encouraged to pursue international collaborations. The starting date is flexible, but would ideally be between October 2010 to January 2011. Applicants should submit via email a curriculum vitae, list of publications, a two page statement of current and future research interests, and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to dr.mcsmith@me.com. Applications received before August 31st will receive full consideration, but applications after this date may also be welcomed if no suitable candidate has been found.
