Job Description:

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space-based astronomical observatory scheduled for launch in 2014 and slated to be the successor to the highly successful Hubble Space Telescope. It will have a 6.5m segmented primary mirror and five science instruments for imaging and spectroscopy in the near- and mid-infrared regions of the spectrum.

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus, is one of the world's foremost space astronomy centers. STScI is a non-profit organization managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. STScI performs the JWST science operations for NASA, as it has done for Hubble since 1990. STScI maintains close ties with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), which manages the JWST project, and with other national and international partners. STScI offers a dynamic and stable work environment with competitive salaries and an excellent benefits package, and provides the opportunity to use cutting-edge technology to participate in the next generation of space science and discovery.

STScI is seeking a Science Instrument (SI) Engineer to support its role in the development and operation of the JWST instruments. Prior to launch, this will include participation in SI integration and testing (at GSFC and other sites), verification and validation, risk analyses, trade studies, engineering support for design of SI-related ground systems, and design of engineering telemetry trending and analysis tools. After launch, this will include routine SI systems monitoring and oversight, in close collaboration with the STScI flight operations team; anomaly identification, response, investigation, and resolution; and optimization of SI operations to enhance and extend scientific capabilities. The candidate may also be involved in the STScI support of the Hubble Space Telescope or other missions.

The position requires the ability to independently identify and resolve problems through application of standard analytical, engineering, and scientific methods. The candidate must have knowledge of the major subsystems for space-based platforms, and the skills needed to understand and improve the engineering systems critical to highly complex space-based instruments. This requires expert knowledge in one or more computer operating systems and high level languages, and in the relevant (e.g., electrical, thermal, and mechanical) engineering fields.

The candidate should have strong drive and initiative, and will work in collaboration with experts in a wide range of areas from across STScI and other partner institutions. The candidate will need to establish and maintain effective working relationships with NASA and industry partners, work effectively in cross-disciplinary teams, and be able to communicate effectively.

The candidate must possess a degree in a relevant engineering discipline or other technically related field. He/she should have a minimum of three years of experience in the design, integration and testing, operations, or maintenance of space or scientific instruments, preferably in an astronomical observatory or aerospace environment. An advanced degree, experience in a leadership role, or familiarity with astronomical observatories in space would be considered a plus. The level of appointment will be commensurate with the education and expertise of the candidate.

Interested candidates are requested to complete an on-line application. A resume and a statement discussing relevant expertise and past experience should be attached through the "Upload Resume Section". Please include "10-0036" in the file name. Candidates should also provide the names of three references. Applications received by July 31, 2010 will receive full consideration. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Included Benefits:

Comprehensive Medical, Dental, Vision and Perscription coverage.
Generous vacation, sick and discretionary leave plans.
Tuition Reimbursement
Retirement contribution of 10% of salary by STScI towards your retirement.
Flexible works schedule, casual environment collaborative culture.
