Job Description:

The Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), as part of its research program Formation and evolution of stars and planetary systems, plans to start a PhD project at the University of Amsterdam focused on the evolution of the most massive stars in low metallicity Local Group galaxies, to begin Autumn 2010.

This study aims at an in-depth census of the massive star populations of several low metallicity dwarf galaxies, such as GR8, LeoA and WLM, targeting both the O- and early-B star population as well as the more evolved population, including Luminous Blue Variable stars and hypergiants. VLT/X-Shooter GTO time has been reserved to execute part of this program. Massive stars in the nearby Magellanic Clouds will also be studied. In this context, data has been secured in the VLT/FLAMES Tarantula Survey.

Interested candidates should have a Master degree in astronomy or physics (or the equivalent) and submit via email (to the address below) a concise letter of interest and a CV.
