Job Description:

Applications are invited for the position of an Instrumentation Integration Engineer for the Instrumentation Division at the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany and Chile.

The main tasks include integration and testing of astronomical instruments and sub-systems both in Garching and Chile, as well as mechanical or opto-mechanical design of instrument sub-systems, and the follow-up of manufacturing contracts. The successful candidate will be initially dedicated to supporting the preparatory work required for the commissioning of the AOF in Paranal in 2014.

The succcessful candidate will spend an initial period of approximately one year at ESO Headquarters in Garching, to become familiar with the AOF project, its sub-systems and integration plans. After this initial period you will be reassigned to ESO in Chile for a period of 3 years to assist with the preparation of one of the VLT telescopes for acceptance of the AOF. Following this, a return to Garching is foreseen to participate in future instrumentation activities for the VLT and E-ELT.

The position requires a diploma or degree in engineering or equivalent, specialising in mechanical or opto-mechanical systems.

You should have a good record in mechanical design and assembly, and experience in the follow-up of mechanical contracts with manufacturers. You should be skilled in CAD systems and have experience in producing manufacturing drawings.

A good command of English is essential and a good knowledge of Spanish highly desirable.
