Job Description:

Kepler Postdoctoral Research Associate position at NOAO

The National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) invites applications for a postdoctoral position at NOAO/Tucson to work on the NASA Kepler mission with Dr. Steve B. Howell. The Kepler mission was launched in March 2009 and is returning superior light curves for over 100,000 stars, a large number of which contain exo-planet transit-like signatures. Dr. Howell is a Kepler Science Team member and one of the follow-up observers for the mission helping to vet the candidate list into false positives as well as real exo-planet detections.

This position requires an active and detailed observer familiar with optical imaging and spectroscopy collection, data reduction, and analysis. Experience in speckle imaging techniques would be useful as well. Kepler follow-up at NOAO consists of many nights at the telescope during the observing season, large amounts of data reduction and requires good organizational, analysis, and presentation skills. Other requirements of the applicant are Ph.D in Astronomy, Physics or related science.

The position is funded initially for one year. The appointment may be extended for an additional 2 years contingent on the candidate’s successful performance and continuation of funding

To apply, please submit electronically a CV including details of observing and data reduction experiences, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent electronically to hrnoao@noao.edu -- Reference Kepler Postdoc Research Associate – Job #1025

Applications received by August 15, 2010 will receive full consideration. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Dr. Steve Howell, showell@noao.edu

NOAO is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. We value and foster a diverse research environment. Women and underrepresented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference granted to qualified Native Americans living on or near the Tohono O'Odham reservation.
