Job Description:
The Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies is offering two postgraduate scholarships to work in the star formation group led by Prof. Tom Ray. Funding is available for 4 years starting in September 2010. For each of the positions, the funding includes a stipend, postgraduate fees, as well as travel support.The students will work on the interpretation of observations of young stellar objects, their disks, and outflows. In the first project, supervised by Dr. Aleks Scholz, the student will analyse infrared and submm observations of disks around brown dwarfs. The second project, supervised by Prof. Tom Ray, will be focused on radio observations of jets from young stars using the new e-MERLIN facility in the UK and e-VLA in the US. While the two projects are strongly focused on observations, there will be opportunities to include modelling.
A primary degree in physics, or a related field, and a background in observational astronomy are mandatory. Programming skills and experience with astronomical data analysis are beneficial.
