Job Description:
Applications are invited for two Super Science Fellows to undertake research in exoplanetary science at UNSW. The prestigious ARC Super Science Fellowship scheme targets early-career researchers (within three years of completing their PhD) who have a strong track record. These Fellowships at UNSW are funded through a project entitled “A New Era for Australian Exoplanetary Science”, which will see three key areas of investigation being pursued: the implementation of the CYCLOPS fibre-feed and its use in next generation rocky planet searches; high-resolution direct-imaging follow-up with the Gemini NICI facility of Anglo-Australian Planet Search targets; and the continued development of a planetary atmospheric code for use in the analysis of atmospheric detections in transiting exoplanets.
Two Fellows will be offered a full-time, fixed-term appointment for three years, to work in two (or more) of these three areas. Start dates are negotiable, but preferably will be before Dec. 31, 2010. There is scope for the successful candidates to shape a role that suits their particular strengths, background and interests within the overall parameters of the research project. Each Fellow will be able to access a research support budget of up to $20k per annum.
The Fellows will be based within the Exoplanetary Science and Planetary Atmospheres groups at UNSW ( http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~cgt , http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jbailey/planets ) headed by Professors Chris Tinney and Jeremy Bailey, and will work closely with international teams at the forefront of exoplanetary research. The Fellows will be based at the UNSW campus in Sydney. Rated as having one of the highest standards of living in the world, Sydney offers warm weather, great food, a vibrant cosmopolitan, multicultural lifestyle and an active cultural community.
Candidates who have read all the relevant documentation are encouraged to contact Profs. Tinney (c.tinney@unsw.edu.au) or Bailey (j.bailey@unsw.edu.au) for additional information before applying.
Applications close 12 July 2010
