Job Description:
The Astrophysics Science Division (ASD) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) invites applications for the position of Chief of the Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics Laboratory. The Laboratory houses 14 civil servant scientists as well as a number of support scientists, postdocs and students. Areas of scientific research include experimental and theoretical investigations of exoplanets, debris disks, comparative planetology, and the structure and evolution of stars and their atmospheres. The Lab is actively developing instrumentation for high contrast imaging, coronagraphy, interferometry, and spectroscopy from space in order to study exoplanets. Members of the Lab serve as Project Scientists for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and are involved in development of mission and instrument concepts for future telescopes to study exoplanets.Candidates for this position should have strong records of achievement in astronomical research as evidenced by publications and funded research projects, and should be internationally recognized as leaders in one of the research fields listed above. Applicants should possess demonstrated leadership ability by, for example, having led a significant research effort, experience as a Project Scientist, or supervision of a group of scientists and engineers. Knowledge of NASA scientific programs and roadmaps is considered an advantage. Preference will be given to a candidate with demonstrated leadership in the area of exoplanets.
ASD has an exciting research environment, with research programs in Galactic and extragalactic astronomy and cosmology, studies of the cosmic microwave background, gravitational wave astrophysics and numerical relativity, x-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, and cosmic ray physics. The Division has significant roles in the development of future missions, such as JWST, JDEM, IXO, LISA, TPF, ATLAST, SOFIA, GEMS, and Astro-H as well as on-going Explorer missions Swift, RXTE, and WMAP.
