Job Description:

South African Square Kilometre Array Research Chair.

The South African government has recognized the potential for the Square Kilometre Array to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers on the continent and is investing significantly in the South African SKA Precursor MeerKAT, as well as facilities such as the 10m-class SALT telescope and the HESS in Namibia. To grow the local radio-astronomical community, an SKA Research Chair position is available at the Department of Astronomy of the University of Cape Town (UCT). This post involves almost US$ 2 million in funding over a 5-year period and can be renewed for a further two cycles of 5 years. The Chair will come with ample funding for postdoctoral fellows, student bursaries, as well as equipment funding, and travel support.

The UCT SKA Research Chair will focus on extragalactic multi-wavelength astronomy with emphasis on galaxy formation, evolution and cosmology, through radio observations with MeerKAT and synergies with ground- and/or space-based observations in the optical, infra-red and sub-mm domains. We expect the Chair to take an active role in the large MeerKAT survey projects currently under development.

The ideal candidate for the UCT SKA Chair will hold a PhD in Astronomy or a related discipline and have extensive experience in multi-wavelength astronomy with a track record in supervising graduate students. We require the candidate to be strongly motivated to build a dynamic research team that will fully participate in the international research community. A strong publication record in refereed journals is highly desirable.

For further information please contact Profs. Renee Kraan-Korteweg or Erwin de Blok. Interested candidates should send a CV, bibliography, brief summary of research, outline of future plans, and three letters of recommendation by 15 February 2010 to Ms Carol Marsh (admin@ast.uct.ac.za). Electronic submissions are encouraged.
