Job Description:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position to work with Dr. Todd Tripp on the analysis of ultraviolet spectroscopy of the low-redshift intergalactic medium and gaseous halos of galaxies using data from the recently installed Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. This position will work on high-resolution absorption spectroscopy of 52 quasars that will be observed in the upcoming year, including very high signal-to-noise data. These data will be used to study hot gas and the "missing baryons" in gaseous halos and the IGM as well as galactic inflows and outflows driven by galactic winds, accretion processes, and galaxy interactions. The HST data will be supplemented with ancillary observations of the absorber environments obtained from the ground. The position is initially offered for two years and can be extended for a third year subject to the availability of funding. The target start date is September 2010. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in Astronomy, Math, Physics, or a related field, with experience in the analysis of interstellar and intergalactic gases relevant to the science program described above. Experience in the study of low to moderate redshift galaxies is also valuable. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Interested candidates should send a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, and a statement of research interests to the address above. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly to the address above. These materials may be submitted electronically (reply@astro.umass.edu). Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.
The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer. Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.
Included Benefits:
This position includes coverage for health, dental, and vision care.
