Job Description:

The James Madison University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2009 in the field of astronomy, space science, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will teach at all levels of the physics and astronomy curriculum, including courses for non-science majors, and is expected to establish an externally funded research program involving undergraduates. The department has 19 full-time faculty members and ~100 students in our multi-track baccalaureate-only program. Current astronomy research in the department includes astroparticle and early universe studies, star formation, astrochemistry, and debris disks. Other departmental research areas include soft condensed matter, materials science, computational physics, and nuclear/particle physics. JMU has easy access to NRAO Charlottesville, NRAO Green Bank, and is approximately two hours from the Washington, D.C. area. In May 2005, the department moved into a new Physics and Chemistry building. In excess of $2.7M has been spent equipping this modern facility.
