Job Description:
Tenure-Track Position in AstrophysicsThe Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track position in astrophysics. The search will give some preference to theory, instrumentation, and infrared or longer wavelength observation, but excellent candidates in all areas are encouraged to apply. Existing faculty have active research programs in galaxy evolution and dynamics, cosmology, stellar populations, compact objects, nuclear and neutrino astrophysics, general relativity, and instrumentation. The Research Triangle is a dynamic R&D environment including NC State and Duke Universities, with NRAO/GBT a few hours drive away. UNC-CH has 60 nights guaranteed per year on the high-performance 4m SOAR telescope atop Cerro Pachon, Chile, and operates a state-of-the-art remote observing center. We are also a partner in the 11-m SALT telescope in South Africa and run a network of robotic telescopes (the PROMPT rapid response array in Chile and SkyNet globally). The Goodman Instrumentation Lab built SOAR's high-throughput facility spectrograph and is working on several other SOAR and large telescope instrument projects.
Applicants should apply on line by visiting https://s4.its.unc.edu/RAMS4/searchCriteria.do?type=F specifying Physics and Astronomy in the Department drop-down list box, and uploading pdf versions of their cover letter, CV, publication list, and separate research and teaching statements by January 8, 2009. They must also arrange for four letters of recommendation to arrive by the same date via email at astrosearch2008@physics.unc.edu and subsequently in hard copy. Please also send an email indicating that you have submitted an application. UNC is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages women and minority applicants.
