Job Description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tufts University invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Observational Astronomy/Astrophysics to begin September 1, 2009. To qualify for the position the candidate must have a Ph. D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field; post-doctoral experience with observations obtained by either ground-based or space-based astronomical instruments; and a vigorous research program of internationally recognized importance. We are particularly interested in candidates working in extragalactic research related to observational cosmology who will broaden our current areas of research. The candidate is expected to teach courses in astronomy and astrophysics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to mentor undergraduates in individual research projects. We expect the new hire to be able to generate research grants after coming to Tufts, to sustain research programs of high international standards, and to supervise dissertation work by graduate students in astronomy or astrophysics.

The review of applications will begin November 1, 2008, and continue until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Astronomy Search Committee, c/o Gayle Grant, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Robinson Hall, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155. Complete applications may be sent by email to gayle.grant@tufts.edu. A Curriculum Vitae and a Description of Future Research Plans and Teaching Experience should be included with the application. Three Letters of Reference must be submitted with the Application or in separate mailings.
