Job Description:

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan seeks to hire a tenure track faculty member with expertise in data mining and analysis of large datasets. The department has prioritized the intellectual areas of extragalactic astronomy/cosmology, star formation, and high energy/compact objects. The successful applicant can start as early as Sept 1, 2009.

This position is part of a cluster hire, funded by the University President, to strengthen expertise in the area of Data Mining, Learning, and Discovery with Massive Datasets. Other departments participating in the cluster hire include the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, of Statistics and of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. There will be participation by other disciplinary departments as well as the School of Information and the Medical School in the longer term.

Research facilities available to the successful applicant include the twin Magellan 6.5 meter telescopes in Chile, the MDM 1.3 meter and 2.4 meter telescopes on Kitt Peak, the 26 meter UM radio telescope and the departmental computing network.
