Job Description:

The Department of Physics at Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in observational astrophysics at the assistant/associate professor level that could begin as early as Fall 2008. The successful candidate should be able to conduct an active research program and procure external funds. Our observational program includes the use of the newly constructed NSU’s Rapid Response Robotic Telescope (RRRT) at the Fan Mountain Observatory, VA and the development of astronomical instrumentation. The candidate responsibilities will also include teaching undergraduate courses in astronomy and/or physics; supervise student research activities at the undergraduate level and participate in service related activities. The candidate will be expected to participate in our current research activities centered in the photometric and polarimetric study of compact objects, and in special, Gamma-ray Bursts (GRB) optical afterglows and Blazars using the 24” RRRT. To receive consideration, candidates should have a Ph. D. in Astronomy or Physics; research experience in observational optical astronomy and effective communication skills in both classroom and laboratory settings. Preferred qualifications include: teaching experience at the college level that may include typical graduate student level teaching experience; interest in optical instrumentation and interest in teaching department’s intermediate and introductory level astronomy courses.
