Job Description:
Faculty Position in CosmologyUniversity of Pittsburgh
Department of Physics and Astronomy
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu/ ) invites applications for a new faculty member in astrophysics/cosmology to join our tenured or tenure-stream faculty, with the level of individual appointment determined by the qualifications of the applicant. There is also a possibility that the appointment will be a chaired Professorship. The appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, would begin in the Fall Term 2009, or thereafter.
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong physics backgrounds who will complement current research strengths in theoretical cosmology and extragalactic astronomy, and will consider candidates with any area of specialization within cosmology, including those areas of particle astrophysics which address the fundamental nature of dark matter and/or dark energy. The Department is a significant user of national and international research facilities, is a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) collaboration and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) collaboration. Some faculty participate in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) project, Pan-STARRs, and SDSS-III. In addition to research accomplishments and future promise, candidates must show potential for a high degree of teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by November 15, 2008. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and brief teaching statement to pasearch+cosmo@pitt.edu . In addition, applicants should arrange to have at least three letters of reference sent to: Cosmo Search Committee, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.
