Job Center Summary

The AAS hosts a Job Center at each winter AAS meeting. It is a place for job seekers to find jobs and interview jobs and employers to advertise their jobs and to interview job candidates.

There is no cost to employers or job seekers to participate in the job center.

Employers: If you are planning to conduct interviews or have questions about the Job Center, please let us know. Send your name, institution and position for which you will be interviewing or your questions to jobs@aas.org.

Job Seekers: To participate in the Job Center, please submit your resume and cover sheet to jobs@aas.org at the AAS Executive Office by 15 December.

Job Center Details

What is it? The Job Center is a designated area at each AAS Meeting for employers and job seekers to meet.

Where is it? The Job Center is held at the Meeting site in either a curtained-off area of the exhibit hall or a separate room. The location is advertised in the Meeting's Final Program and signs are posted onsite.

Who should participate? Those looking for an astronomical job or employee should participate. Meeting registration is required. See the Job Register for a sample of the positions advertised at the Job Center.

How does an employer participate?

Required

If you have an open position in the Job Register and would like to interview at the Job Center, send your name, institution, job number and position for which you will be interviewing to jobs@aas.org.

If you have a non-Job Register position, bring a copy of the job ad with you to the Job Center for posting.

Register for the Meeting and sign-in at the Job Center.

Optional

Read the extra events section of the Meeting Announcement to see if there are any employer networking events you should attend.

Post times you are available for interviews next to your ad at the Job Center. Rooms for informal interviews are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Check the dissertation presentations for potential employees. They are marked "D" in the Meeting Final Program.

Peruse the Resume Notebooks located in the Job Center.

Use the Job Center Message Board to get in touch with job seekers.

Introduce yourself to members of the Employment Committee.

How does a job seeker participate?

Required

Register for the Meeting and sign-in at the Job Center.

Optional

Submit your resume and cover sheet for the Resume Notebook that will be on display at the Job Center. If you have a short and long version, submit the short version. You may email the resume and cover sheet to jobs@aas.org at least two weeks prior to the Meeting or submit two copies at the Job Center.

Have extra resume copies with you at the Job Center. 5-10 is usually sufficient.

Read the extra events section of the Meeting Announcement to see if there are any networking events you should attend.

Note all open jobs in Job Register that interest you.

Check to see if any of the institutions where you are interested in working are exhibiting at the Meeting.

Peruse the Meeting abstracts for institutions, projects or individuals related to your job search. You may use the SEARCH box on the AAS Homepage to search abstracts online. Use the current meeting number to limit the search, i.e. AAS Meeting 208.

If you are giving a Meeting presentation, include this fact in the cover letter of any job applications you send out prior to the Meeting.

If giving a poster, consider posting your photo so potential employers can recognize you.
