The National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) seeks an astronomer with accomplishments in research and research leadership to head its new NOAO Gemini Science Center (NGSC).

As a division of the national observatory, the objective of the NGSC is to provide leadership and all services required for U.S. astronomers to make the discoveries of which the new Gemini Observatory is capable.

The successful candidate we select will be creative, experienced, and at the frontier of astronomy. The candidate will have a track record in research, team management, community and project interfacing, with the ability to lead a group of a dozen engineers and scientists located in Tucson, Arizona and La Serena, Chile. The candidate should be able to continue to carry out a program of research in astronomy.

To assist the U.S. community in playing its major role in the International Gemini Program, the Director of NGSC will have proven consensus building skills, and a broad knowledge of the U.S. astronomical community.

NOAO’s long-range plan, including that for NGSC, is on the Web at www.noao.edu/dir/lrplan/. The focus is on implementing the recent decadal survey, on large telescopes of the present and the future, and on the U.S. observing system as a whole.

The position reports to the NOAO Director, and the Director NGSC is an Associate Director of NOAO. The Director NGSC is responsible with the other directors for developing NOAO’s strategic plan in concert with the Observatory Council and NOAO’s advisory committees.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

* PhD in astronomy, physics or a related field.
* Experience in user support for a major research facility.
* Experience in the development of innovative instrument concepts, and delivery of optical and/or infrared instruments to a project.
* Research accomplishments in astronomy and astrophysics.
* Ability to provide scientific and engineering leadership to peers, and more junior colleagues.
* Experience in the management of major scientific and/or technical programs.
