Attention: Sandra Abbey, NOAO Human Resources Manager
About half of the time will be devoted to maintain and optimize the performance of existing systems: monitoring image quality and telescope alignment, supervising the coating and cleaning of optics, and environmental control. The other half will be available for participation in new telescope and instrumentation projects. See our web site www.ctio.noao for specific descriptions at the Job Opportunities Available. The instrument development group in Chile will actively collaborate with Tucson NOAO colleagues building major instrumentation for two projects of an adaptive optics system and near-IR imager for the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive optics system. Instrument development activities of the Observatory are located at CTIO headquarters in the coastal city of LA Serena, Chile (pop.120,000), while the telescopes are located on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon, 1 hour and 15 minutes inland at 2200m and 2700m altitude. Work is primarily in La Serena with frequent visit to the mountain. The ideal candidate will have experience working with astronomical telescope systems. Familiarity with optical-mechanical design, optical testing and alignment of large optics, optical coating and cleaning of telescope optics, wave front sensing and active/adaptive optics will be an important asset. The working language is English. The salary is competitive and commensurate with the responsibility and seniority of the post. Staff members have excellent benefits and living conditions, an overseas allowance, an educational stipend for dependent children, international health care benefits, and annual travel to the point of hire. Bilingual education for children is available at the International School of La Serena, which was co-founded and is supported by AURA. The city of La Serena is a popular seaside tourist destination in South America, with a climate very similar to San Diego, California. Applicants should submit a vita, statement of current instrumentation interest and the names and addresses of three professional references. The position will remain open until filled.
